Have you noticed that your paychecks have been a bit larger than normal lately? That’s because in 2011, the government is cutting the social security payroll tax paid by individuals from 6.2% to 4.2%.

How much is that in stone cold cash? If your annual income is $40,000, that’s $800 over the course of the year divided among your bi-weekly or monthly paychecks. If you earn $80,000 annually, your extra pocket money is $1,600. For those who make $106,800 or above, you’ll see an extra $2,136. Since social security is taxed individually, married couples could get up to a $4,272 take home pay boost for the year.

Now, what should you do with your extra moolah? Sheryl Garrett, the author of the Personal Finance for Dummies Workbook, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of the Garrett Planning Network, suggests these 10 ways to wisely spend your money, in order of importance for increasing your financial standing for years to come.

Balance Your Budget

If you live paycheck to paycheck, or on a tight budget, the extra $66 per month (if your annual income is $40,000) could mean the difference in paying your electricity bill this month – or not. This month, balance your budget with the fatter paychecks. Next month, adjust your budget so your expenses and income balances when the payroll tax cut expires. Since this bonus money is a one-year deal, don’t rely on it next year to cover basic expenses. Focus on other expense-reduction strategies: negotiate your next lease, use coupons at restaurants, ditch buying grocery items that are spoiling in your fridge, or change your IRS withholding if you get a refund every year.

Settle old debts

“Wouldn’t it be nice to pay off your mom and dad for the money they lent you for an apartment deposit?” says Garrett. Use this money to pay off any money you borrowed from family or friends.

Pay Off Credit Cards (and keep them that way)

Credit cards are easiest to attack, since you see the bill each month. If you use Mint.com, you can set up a goal to pay down your credit-card debt, and Mint will prepare a customized plan for you based on your cards’ balances and interest rates.

Boost Your 401(k) Contributions

If you’re currently not taking advantage of the full amount your employer will match on your 401(k), use your extra cash here. Once you’ve fulfilled this amount, deposit any remaining funds in a Roth IRA.

Contribute to a Roth IRA

Unless your adjusted gross income is higher than $122,000 if you’re single, or $179,000 if you’re married, filing jointly, you are eligible to contribute up to $5,000 in a Roth IRA. (The contribution limit is $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) If you haven’t already made that contribution for 2010, you have until April 18, 2011, to do so. You can also, of course, contribute another $5,000 for 2011. While the amount you contribute is not tax deductible, you’ll reap the benefits once you start making withdrawals: all your withdrawals, earnings included, are completely tax-free as long as you’ve held them for at least five years. (And, of course, you need to be 59 ½ or older to make penalty-free contributions.)

Buy Yourself Marketable Skills

Enhance your ability to earn money in any of a number ways. If you’re actively looking for a job, consider hiring a resume service to help polish your resume. If you’ve been thinking of going back to school, take your GRE or GMAT test. Take a continuing education course. Buy a snazzy suit for interviews. The key is to spend cash in a way that will boost your income, now or in the near future.

Invest in Your Health

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to improve your health, now is the time to see a nutritionist. If you’re a smoker, join a stop smoking program. Buy a bicycle to save on gas, or caulk your windows or insulate home. With every investment, think: will this save me money next year by doing this action?

Shop for Organization Tools

Luckily, Mint.com and basic tax software is free, but consider upgrading to the non-free version if you have a home business or more complicated tax forms. If your important documents are scattered across the house, buy a file cabinet or an expandable file organizer. The better organized you are, the easier it will be to manage your money.

Take a Vacay

If you already have all these categories covered, take a vacation. A yoga retreat, cruise or weekend with your honey at a B&B may be just what you need to return home and spend quality time tweaking your budget to perfection.

Marriage can be hard enough some days. Throw money into the mix, and things can get downright ugly.  However, just as disagreements in other aspects of your married life don’t have to result in permanent rifts, disagreements over money don’t have to ruin your relationship.  As with all things in marriage, money issues need to be worked through. Here are some ideas for overcoming disagreements about money in marriage:

Know Thyself

One of the best things you can do is understand your relationship with money.  In order to articulate your position on money to your partner, you need to be able understand.  Think about why you spend (or save) money the way you do.  You should also come to grips with why you don’t like the way your spouse handles money, and determine whether or not your own preferences and money prejudices are coloring the situations.

Avoid Money Discussions When Angry

Before discussing money, make sure that you are both calm.  One way you can do this is to make an “appointment” to discuss money.  That way, you know to calm yourself beforehand.  Money discussions should take place when you are both as rested as possible (not after a long day of work) and when you are not hungry.  Try to find a comfortable location when discussing money, so that both of you are in a more forgiving frame of mind.

Listen to Your Partner

You and your spouse should take turns listening to each other’s ideas.  Listen without interrupting, except to ask clarifying questions.  Then, expect the same respect from your partner.  You should be able to explain your position as well.  If you both agree to listen respectfully, you will get a better idea of each other’s positions, and you will have something to work with when deciding what to do next.

Remember Your Big Picture Goals

Hopefully, you have some big picture goals as a couple.  When disagreeing about money, it is a good idea to pull out your shared goals for retirement, a vacation, kids’ college or your emergency fund.  Together, you can determine what actions will best help you reach your bigger shared financial goals.  Taking the time to re-connect to the commonalities you share will be a big help.

Let Each Person Control Some Money

You should each have control over some of the money.  This should be available for you to use how you want.  With separate spending abilities, it makes it possible for you buy what you want — even if your partner doesn’t agree.  Make it a rule that each spouse will respect what is done with the discretionary spending each has.

In some cases, the best idea is to have separate accounts if you have a hard time agreeing on what to do with money.  Make sure that each of you contributes to a central pot for household expenses, and then you can each have separate checking accounts.  However, even in such a setup, it is important to touch base and make sure you are still working toward shared money goals.

Be Willing to Compromise

Finally, you have to be willing to compromise.  Any relationship has some give and take, and you and your partner need to be ready to give up a little something.  With some thought and planning, it is possible to disagree about money without causing serious problems.

Silicon Prairie News gives its start-up community a voice

You’ve heard of Silicon Valley, and likely Silicon Alley, but have you heard of Silicon Prairie?

Silicon Prairie is geographically hard to define but it’s there– somewhere between Chicago and Colorado, Dallas and the Dakotas–and it’s getting noticed because of one local news source The Silicon Prairie News.

And the Prairie’s entrepreneurs can thank one man, a native Nebraskan named Jeff Slobotski, who decided he wanted to write about the tech sector. After a few days of writing about California’s burgeoning scene, he decided to refocus his efforts on his own community. Recalling the words of my college professor, if you’re going to be a writer, write about what you know.

Slobotski decided to give his community a voice and that voice goes by the name of Silicon Prairie News. He called on the skills of his then friend, now CTO and co-founder Dusty Davidson, who runs BrightMix, a small, local software company.  In July 2008, Slobotski started blogging as a hobby, interviewing local entrepreneurs on his lunch breaks and publishing stories at night.

In June 2009, Slobotski took on Danny Schreiber full time as SPN’s Managing Editor. Schreiber’s favorite players in the SP scene? Dwolla, a mobile payments service that is giving PayPal a run for its money and RockDex, a start up that is capturing the social metrics of plays on YouTube, LastFM and MySpace for musicians.

The boys had a lot to write about, they just needed people to listen. Slobotski, Davidson and Schreiber decided to throw an event to grab the world’s attention; they called it Big Omaha.

Last year’s Big Omaha was a success with over 550 people from 20 states including Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley, Charity: Water‘s Scott Harrison and Zappo’s Tony Hsieh. SPN was suddenly profitable, making money off of sponsorships and ticket sales from the event. Soon they had local businesses and Omaha’s Chamber of Commerce knocking on their door, asking if they could advertise on SPN. The readers came.

SPN currently has 4 full-time employees, 12 freelance writers and 3600 RSS feed email subscribers. At the end of November, the site averaged 25,000 unique visitors, 45,000 page views, and was growing at 10% a month.

“If it weren’t for Silicon Prairie News, there wouldn’t be a start-up scene in the mid-west. They are our voice. Their existence reinforces our culture.” says Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla.

Monday through Friday, expect fresh, daily content focusing on Silicon Prairie entrepreneurs like Dwolla and Hudl, an online coaching application, recently named by Inc. magazine’s 30 under 30. On the weekends, to keep traffic flowing, they’ll repurpose TED Talks or big interviews from other more well-known tech blogs.

“Our first goal is to highlight the story, the angel investors and the entrepreneurs. Our second goal is to tighten, build and connect the community and ecosystem here,” says Slobotski. “There’s value in what we’re doing by reporting on it but our events build communities that get people talking and brainstorming ideas together.”

The overall scene in Silicon Prairie is comprised of a lot of consumer related tech starts up. With the large amount of capital potentially available (read: Berkshire Hathaway and everyone else who is connected to Warren Buffet by one string or another), the scene could be well funded with the right connections.

This coming week, they will launch Silicon Prairie News’ Kansas City bureau, of which Kansan Royce Haynes will be involved. Haynes, like many SPN readers found the site through hearing about Big Omaha on Twitter. “I didn’t expect something of this caliber to take place in Omaha, Nebraska,” he says, “It’s going to be great to now be a part of it and to able to highlight all of the entrepreneurial activity going on in Kansas City.”

Interested in getting in on the Silicon Prairie fun? Save the date for a sweet SPN party Sunday night at SXSWi in March and a Big Omaha style event in Des Moines, Iowa this fall.

Undeterred by the persistently high unemployment rate and slow economic growth, Obama pledges to invest tall stacks of money on "infrastructure." This includes such cutting-edge investments as additional paved trails in local parks -- presumably to ignite the sure-to-boom pedestrian path market. This from the man who also plans to prescribe pain pills instead of covering expensive medical procedures. Basically, in 21st century America we will meander through the world's most intricate system of hike-and-bike paths in a drug-induced daze until we accidentally fall into the abyss. Except it won't be the abyss, just a large hole left from another public works project that was left unfinished because the nation's finances fell into the actual abyss. This is what Obama means by "winning the future."

A lawyer representing a former Zuckerman Spaeder client in a legal fee dispute in Washington told a federal appeals court today that the case belongs in arbitration.

The attorney, David Holzworth of Yoss LLP, who represents James Auffenberg Jr., asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to reverse a trial judge’s refusal to move the dispute from court to arbitration.

Zuckerman lawyers represented Auffenberg in a criminal tax case, winning acquittal for the St. Louis-based automobile dealer. The firm alleges Auffenberg owes more than $834,000 on top of the $1.5 million he has already paid. Auffenberg’s lawyers argue the firm said he would have to pay no more than $1.5 million. The firm sued Auffenberg in Washington’s federal trial court.

Auffenberg’s attorneys moved to stay the fee case in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia almost a year into the litigation. Judge Reggie Walton rejected the effort, saying Auffenberg “actively” participated in the litigation and failed to timely invoke arbitration. More background on the case here and here.

Holzworth said today in court that Auffenberg asserted his arbitration rights orally at the beginning of the litigation. He noted there was no “substantial” discovery in the litigation before Auffenberg moved to stay the proceedings.

Zuckerman lawyers are advocating an “extreme” standard that would require a client to invoke a right to arbitration of a fee dispute before answering a complaint, Holzworth said in court papers filed in December.

Zuckerman partner Francis Carter, representing the firm, argued today in the D.C. Circuit that Auffenberg’s participation in the litigation meant he waived his right to mandatory arbitration. Carter said there were numerous “mile posts” at which Auffenberg could have asked for arbitration.

“If he wanted to arbitrate, he knew how to start it,” Carter said. In court papers, Carter noted that Auffenberg responded to the initial complaint and subsequent amended complaints, among other documents. Auffenberg, Carter noted, did not assert arbitration as a defense.

Judges Douglas Ginsburg and Merrick Garland, sitting with Senior Judge Stephen Williams, did not immediately rule.

Making Money on line – Exchange $469.90 for over $10,000

Yes, making money on line is not easy, unless you know what to do. There are a ton of resources that you can use to make a lot of money online, and you can actually do this all for free. It is amazing the amount of money you can could be making on line without investing any money of your own to begin with. To begin with the process of making money online, I recommend that you download this un-named free e-book (normally sells for $15). It's just a short 4 page introduction to making money on line and how to start out and start making some free money!

Now, the title talks about exchanging $470 for over $10,000. That's what we'll go over in this part of the series. So how does this whole money making thing play out? It is actually outrageously easy.

Step 1 – Join Prowealth Solutions. I'm sure you've heard of it already by now. It officially launched on the 15th of Sept 2006 and is one of the fastest growing programs. Prowealth Solutions pays you in 4 different ways:

  1. Fast Start bonus - $25 per person you sign up.

  2. Monthly Matrix bonus – You are paid $1 per person in your 3x6 matrix. That can total up to $1092 per month. The cool part – you don't have to sponsor anyone yourself to get this. It can all be spillover and your down line's work.

  3. Matching Bonuses – You're paid 50% matching bonus on your direct referrals, 30% on the second level and 20% on the third level.

  4. Monthly Bonus Pools – 5% if you're bronze (3 personal recruits), 3% for silver (10 recruits or 3 bronzes), 3% for gold (30 recruits or 3 silver). 3% if you're platinum (100 recruits or 3 gold) and 5% for diamond members (3 platinum recruits). This totals to around $32 for bronze members, $75 for silver, $350 for gold, $2100 for platinum and    $6800 for diamond members on top of everything else that they're already making.

Clearly, this is one of the best pay systems out there and you can be making a lot of money on line doing this, if you can recruit people. Isn't that the hardest thing though? Everyone can make money with MLM systems, if only you can get recruits. So how do you do it? You DONT!

This is one of the best things I've seen in recent history – you can get over 100 paid sign ups for $400 with a company named diamond central. Unlike most other guaranteed sign ups, these are not free members who're given a few cents to sign up under you as a free member, these are all people who WILL join under you in Prowealth Solutions.

Total Cost - $400 (for 100 sign ups) + $69.90 (for prowealth solutions - $34.95 for start up + $34.95 for the first month) = $469.90

Now let's see how much money you'll be making:

  1. Fast Start bonuses - $2500, because of the fast start bonuses.

  2. Monthly Matrix bonus – At least $100, but it could be a lot more.

  3. Matching bonuses – based on the above, they can be a lot more too!

  4. Monthly Bonus Pools - $2100.

  5. This is the clincher – As a platinum member you get $1 for every person who becomes a paid member in the entire system in the Powerline after you. That's about $1 per minute - $60 per hour without doing anything!

Total at the end of the system (about 3 months at most) - $2500 + $300 + $700 + $60x24x30 (for just one month) = $46,700.

How's that for a return? So why did I say $10,000 in the title? Because $46,700 sounds like a big hoax! But it's possible, if only you're willing to do it. Many people never really experience God's grace because they refuse to believe that it's possible for them to sin (their pride) or that God is incapable of forgiving them because their sin is too great (belittling God). It's possible, you just need to analyze it. Look at it intellectually – is it possible? Yes! Then why let your emotions ruin the party for you?

Is it a scam? I'm already doing this! There's no way they can pretend like they signed up 100 people under you! You have your own tracking systems and you can know for sure that you are making money online regardless. Secondly, I've spoken to them many times myself, there responses have always been prompt and sincere. If there's a mistake they clarify and try to fix, but don't pretend like it never happened.

That's how easy it can be making money online. Now you're probably wondering – how do I make that initial $470? You'll learn how to do make the initial money on line without making an investment of your own in here, and in the next edition of – Making Money Online!
